With her eye-catching work revolving around science, design, and nature, Neri Oxman manages to create worlds in her projects where we ponder our involvement with nature. This book is a tribute to her work and what she represents to humans and nature.

I was assigned Neri Oxman as the subject for a book I would have to create, and this was the outcome. Made with an aluminum binder with engraving on the front/back cover and spine. My thought process for using a mental binder was to treat her work as case studies in a scientific environment. I felt it was only appropriate with her work implementing biology, art, and science. Her team is filled with designers, scientists, biologists, and engineers which emphasizes the more sophisticated look of the cover.

NERI OXMAN: DESIGN X SCIENCE

The idea of the title came from the main values of Neri Oxman. She is very passionate about using design in science and using science in design. This relationship extends with her team named OXMAN. There are scientists, biologists, designers, creatives. A hub for designers and scientists to collaborate and produce stunning objects, and projects and develop ideas.

Taking a look at the spreads, I decided that her work should take place much of the spreads to emphasis her unique work. Displaying interesting patterns, materials, and organisms that can be seen throughout her projects. Additionally, for the typefaces, I decided to use two typefaces that give a sense of clarity and scientific by using geometric and modernistic types.

A mobile app would bring another element to the NERI OXMAN: DESIGN X SCIENCE experience where we can interact with her work in another medium. The app closely follows the direction the book took with a couple of tweaks. Playing with another type of design made me view her work in a different way where I could have interactive elements throughout the app.

Why the X?

The X has a significant importance in Neri Oxman’s branding. Not only being a letter featured in her last name but it is also used in her website to showcase her company’s values. I wanted to bring back this visual element not only to her book but for her app as well. With the letter X having a great potential design with its two diagonal lines, I believe it wa the perfect fit for this project with how avant-garde Oxman’s work is.
