The iconic Montreal metro is a means of transportation for many millions of Montrealers every day. Field with over 68 stations in the train system, it has become a part of Montreal. With its unique stations featuring artworks from important artists and architects from Montreal, I was tasked to create a brochure and present the many artworks featured in the metro stations.

Introduction

One of the most iconic features of the Montreal Metro is the recognizable sounds we hear. From the announcements to the iconic “dou, dou, dou”, to the various emergency calls we love hearing every week, I found this is an aspect that we sometimes overlook in design. With my brochure, I wanted to bring back the sounds of the metro in a literal sense. Highlighting them throughout the book as if we are commuting and we are exploring the city.

How would it work?

For my concept, the challenge was to transform these iconic sounds into a comprehensible design system that can be used in the book. This system is where I highlight the iconic sounds of the Montreal Metro throughout the book. Chapter dividers would include an announcement that we would often hear such as “La STM vous souhaite la bienvenue à bord” These announcements would continue throughout the book. Furthermore, when it comes to the text layout, I wanted to have a contrast of type size to represent how loud and quiet the Montreal Metro can get.
